Carolyn Lam is a Senior Consultant at the Singapore National Heart Centre, Professor of Duke–NUS Cardiovascular Sciences Academic Clinical Programme, and Scientific Advisor at the SingHealth Clinical Trials Coordinating Centre. She graduated from the NUS Faculty of Medicine, completed advanced specialty training in cardiology in Singapore, and pursued her research fellowship at the Cardiorenal Laboratory, heart failure fellowship at the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases, and Advanced Cardiology and Master of Biomedical Sciences at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA. She received further training in clinical and genetic epidemiology during the Framingham Heart Study in Boston, MA, USA, graduated from the Stanford Executive Program, Stanford University, CA, USA, and obtained her PhD at University Medical Centre Groningen, Netherlands.
Professor Lam’s clinical sub-specialty is heart failure, and she is recognized globally for her expertise in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). She also has expertise in women’s cardiovascular disease, hemodynamics, echocardiography, biomarkers, and clinical trials. She started the first HFpEF program and women’s heart health clinic in Singapore.
Professor Lam is a member of the Research Executive Committee of the Duke–NUS Cardiovascular Sciences Academic Clinical Programme and affiliate member of the Duke–NUS Institute of Precision Medicine. She is the Programme Lead of the Asian neTwork for Translational Research and Cardiovascular Trials (ATTRaCT), an A*STAR Biomedical Research Council-funded research platform winning the A*STAR Borderless Award (2019). She is Principal Investigator of the Asian Sudden Cardiac Death in Heart Failure (ASIAN-HF) study, a multinational Asian study of heart failure across 11 Asian countries, and fellow of multiple organizations including the American College of Cardiology, the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), the ASEAN Federation of Cardiology, and the Academy of Medicine Singapore. She is a member of the Royal College of Physicians, the HFpEF Committee for the Heart Failure Association of the ESC, the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) Task Force, and the Education and Management Division Committee on Clinical Applications of Cardiac Bio-Markers for the IFCC. Professor Lam has been recognized with numerous awards, including the L’Oreal Women In Science Award (2012), InterAcademy Medical Panel Young Physician Leader – Berlin (2012), the award for the Junior Chamber International Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World for 2014 – Singapore, and SingHealth GCEO – Outstanding Clinical Researcher Award (2019). She is also a current recipient of the Singapore National Medical Research Council Senior Investigator Clinician Scientist Award. She serves as a consultant on several global advisory boards for cardiovascular disease, as a member of the executive committees of several global heart failure trials, and as an associate editor for Circulation and the European Journal of Heart Failure. She has published more than 200 articles in journals including New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, The Lancet, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and European Heart Journal. Professor Lam is heard weekly on the global podcast ‘Circulation On The Run’ and appears regularly on television as the resident doctor of the Body and Soul health program run by MediaCorp Singapore.
